Music styles are numerous today. If you were asked about how many contemporary and not only contemporary music styles you know, you would probably have a hard time remembering at least a half of them.

In modern culture there is a commonly held view that classical or academic music is much more perfect and advanced than any other music which is not serious and may be listened to by lower classes, unsophisticated masses of people.

Today electronic music is experiencing boom in its development as electronic technologies, especially computer technologies have revolutionized and simplified numerous processes that were previously required for musicians to create their work.

Music styles

Music styles are numerous today. If you were asked about how many contemporary and not only contemporary music styles you know, you would probably have a hard time remembering at least a half of them. The reasons why there are so many music styles today are various; the leading role in the everlasting diversification of music nowadays belongs to the phenomenon that pushes everything forward today, and that is money. Indeed, besides such fundamental and long-living music genres as, for example, classic music or folk music (sometimes called traditional music) the so called popular music, the definition of which appears to many people blurred and obscure, is driven almost exclusively by commercial interests of both producers and performers themselves. The reason why this is happening today is largely dependent on the global processes that condition almost every aspect of today's life, particularly the process of globalization and the development of information technologies. As technologies become more and more affordable for middle and lower classes of the society, more and more middle and lower-class-oriented content is required for such masses on the television, radio, newspapers, and lately on the internet. This means that the more sophisticated music that can only be understood by well-educated (both generally and musically) people has become less sought after in the total amount of music listeners all around the world. This logically drives us to the conclusion that popular music (or pop music) is basically simplified version of music that can be understood by the large amount of population. And if you add the tremendous commercial success that such music may have due to such popularity, you will understand why new and new performers, singers, bands appear every year in many countries. On the other hand, traditional music, or folk music that originally had the same position that pop music has today, is unfortunately getting forgotten, especially in western cultures, although much more wisdom and experience of nations is usually put into such music and songs. Hundreds of new styles and sub-styles displace folk music from its leading position among ordinary people. And the phenomenon of popular music (in the wider sense of this word) is getting more and more complex as new ideas, new styles are being invented.
