Emo

A very popular musical style (and not only musical style) nowadays is emo. Emo is basically an abbreviation for "Emotional" which is the main concept of the subculture. The term denotes a special kind of hardcore music based on strong emotions in the vocalist's voice and melodic but sometimes chaotic or completely absent musical component. The distinctive features of this style are the manner of singing, which often includes screech, moaning, whispering, roaring etc. The lyrics of the songs are usually of a personal character - they tell listeners about the performer's personal feelings and emotions; but sometimes the songs may be about politics.
Although the style is very young (in comparison to other musical styles and genres) – it appeared in the 1980s, there are already various subtypes of emo like emocore, hardcore emo, emo violence, screemo, French screemo as well as some others.
Another distinctive feature of emo is that it is simultaneously a music style and a subculture. The origination of a whole subculture on the basis of a separate music style is a characteristic feature of modern music and this seems to be a natural process that started in the beginning of the twentieth century – throughout the music history any style that represented a deviation or complete opposition to standard mainstream music attracted thousands of young people who tried to separate themselves from the rest of the 'crowd' by wearing certain clothes, behaving in a certain way etc.
