Indie rock
Indie rock (or independent rock) is basically the music of those who want to be independent from anything that can influence their vision of music, art, life in general, etc. It is a genre of alternative rock music that exists primarily on an underground level in an independent informational and commercial space. The peculiarity of this music is that it is not a separate music style, but a more generalized term to denote a wide variety of musicians and styles that are united by their adherence to underground culture, so called counter culture and that are usually have a certain relation with rock music. The creative and financial independence of such musicians, as a rule, is provided by the absence of a contract in general or by a contract with an indie-label. Thus, contracts with 'mainstream' record companies are not typical for indie-rock. And although in cases when indie rockers become excessively popular and indie record and distribution companies cooperate with major labels to distribute such musicians' work, the creative process, as well as the process of making decisions remains autonomous. For example, there is a complete freedom for indie rockers to investigate and experiment with sound, emotions or lyrics which is not typical for mainstream-oriented record companies that produce music based upon preferences of the majority of people. In a way indie rock may be described as a subculture that unites all kinds of protests, yearning for freedom of thought and expression.
