Punk rock

Punk or punk rock is a genre of music with one major meaning: the desire to play is much more important than the ability to play. This genre appeared in the middle of the 1970s in the USA and a little later in Great Britain. Punk rock combined social protest of young people and musical rejection of musical forms or rock that existed at that time, thus primitive playing and provocative character of performance characteristic for early rock and roll were intentionally cultivated.
The main purport of punk musicians was the intent to play which predominated their ability to play. Thanks to such definition a diverse range of musicians appeared from primitive and 'lightweight' Ramones to the complicated and experimental music of Television. Such approach made it possible for punk rock to become an integral and major part of a whole range of subcultures like punk, DIY, straight edge etc. In the end of 1970 punk rock began its development in Great Britain with a more rowdy and politicised touch than in the US; due to this fact by 1977 the genre becomes one of the most notable phenomena in rock music of Great Britain. With time punk rock gave birth to a large number of variations. Among them are melodic and lightweight pop-punk, aggressive hardcore and Oi, as well as combinations with other genres – ska punk and postpunk which has become a separate genre. Today there is a general opinion that the era of punk rock has reached its decline with the occurrence of such groups like Blink 182.
